WELFARE

Karenaid is concerned for three main groups of people who live close to the Thai Burmese border.

1 Migrant workers who have crossed into Thailand to work, many of them illegally. These people work in poor conditions for low wages. Their children have few provisions for education.

2 Refugees living in camps close to the border. These people are recognised as refugees by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees). They have systems of support that have been established over a number of years.

3 Internally displaced people. These people live on Burma but have been forced to leave their homes due to military activity of some sort. It is difficult to reach them but Karenaid has become involved in supporting some of these people.
